The top Republican in the US House of Representatives has told UK lawmakers his mission is to “calm the waters”, even as Trump has unleashed his latest screed against the longtime ally.
In a speech to the British Parliament, Mike Johnson said the US and the United Kingdom “have always been able to work through our differences calmly, as friends. We will continue to do that.”
The statement came just hours after Trump decried the UK’s decision to hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius and as Trump continued his pressure campaign to seize Greenland.
Johnson, who has hewed close to Trump’s messaging throughout the president’s second term, also took time to defend Trump’s actions.
“Clearly, President Trump is taking seriously the modern and dynamic threats that China and Russia pose for our global security, especially in focus in the last few days as it relates to the Arctic,” he said.
Johnson was invited to Parliament by House of Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle as part of events marking 250 years of US independence.
