Media outlets reported that 31 people were killed and four others remain missing after Cyclone “Gezani” struck the city of Toamasina in eastern Madagascar.
The National Office for Risk and Disaster Management said the death toll from Cyclone Gezani has reached 31, including 29 in Toamasina, with four people reported missing and 36 others injured.
It added that the cyclone destroyed between 80 and 90 percent of buildings in the coastal city of Toamasina, while several public infrastructure facilities were damaged, including Analankininina Hospital and buildings at the University of Toamasina.
The office noted that President Mikael Randrianerina declared a state of national disaster during a cabinet meeting to mobilize international aid.
For his part, the president said: “Madagascar cannot overcome this crisis alone.”
