Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has confirmed the death of Basij force commander Gholamreza Soleimani.

In a statement carried by Iran’s semiofficial Tasnim news agency, the IRGC said Soleimani was killed in an “attack by the American-Zionist enemy”.

Soleimani, who led the Basij for the past six years and oversaw internal security operations, “played a strategic and unparalleled role in updating the Basij’s popular and jihadi structure, developing constructive movements, eliminating deprivation, and providing assistance to the oppressed and vulnerable groups,” the IRGC continued.

“This cowardly assassination demonstrates the importance and role of the Basij in the all-out battle against the American terrorist army and the Zionist regime and their mercenaries, especially in the recent war.”
