Macron says war cannot resolve Iran nuclear file

French President Emmanuel Macron has addressed the latest developments in Iran and the Strait of Hormuz during a visit to South Korea.

He said the US-Israeli attacks on Iran will not resolve the issue of Iran’s nuclear programme, calling for diplomacy instead.

“If there is no framework for diplomatic and technical negotiations, the situation can deteriorate again in a few months or a few years,” said Macron.

The French president also threw cold water on a proposed military operation to open the Strait of Hormuz, saying it was “unrealistic”.

“It would take an inordinate amount of time and would expose anyone crossing the strait to coastal threats from the (Iranian) Revolutionary Guards, who possess significant resources, as well as ballistic missiles, (and) a host of other risks,” said Macron.
