Mikati ups calls for high voter turnout in Tripoli municipal elections
Former Prime Minister Najib Mikati called on Tripoli residents to vote in large numbers during the municipal and mukhtar elections. Speaking from Hassan Al-Hujjah Public High School polling station before casting his ballot, Mikati praised the government for its “excellent achievement,” describing elections as “a beautiful expression of democracy” and essential for local development.

Mikati noted that he chose candidates based on merit, not allegiance to a single list. “I selected competent, ethical, and rational individuals from various lists, taking into account Tripoli’s social fabric and ensuring strong female representation,” he said.

Responding to questions, Mikati acknowledged some issues regarding delegate distribution but said the interior minister was addressing them. “When you choose wise and capable individuals, they will surely elect a suitable mayor,” he added.

Commenting on low voter turnout, Mikati said it was still early and urged citizens to vote: “Every vote counts, and in Tripoli, everyone knows one another.”

“Municipal councils should focus solely on development. As politicians, our role is to connect with central authorities to ensure projects are implemented for the city’s benefit,” Mikati concluded, emphasizing the paramount importance of keeping politics out of municipal work and pledging to support the elected team in serving Tripoli.
