President of the Republic Joseph Aoun chaired a ministerial and security meeting at Baabda Palace. The meeting was attended by Minister of Defense Michel Menassa, Minister of Interior Ahmad Hajjar, Minister of Justice Adel Nassar, Army Commander General Rodolph Haykal, Director General of General Security Major General Hassan Choucair, Director General of Internal Security Forces Major General Raed Abdallah, Public Prosecutor Judge Jamal Hajjar, Gendarmerie Commander Brigadier General Jean Awad, Army Intelligence Chief Brigadier General Tony Kahwaji, Head of the ISF's Information Division Brigadier General Mahmoud Qobrosli, Head of the General Security’s Information Bureau Brigadier General Johnny Al-Saissa, Head of the Prisons Directorate at the Ministry of Justice Judge Raja Abi Nader, and Presidential Security and Military Advisor Brigadier General Antoine Mansour.
At the beginning of the meeting, the security situation in the country was discussed in light of recent developments. The discussion was devoted to tackling the issue of overcrowding in Lebanese prisons as a result of the increasing number of prisoners, including Syrian prisoners. It also addressed the measures needed to address this issue, including the establishment of all legal frameworks that would expedite the process.
Separately, President Aoun received Russian Ambassador Alexander to Lebanon Alexander Rudakov accompanied by Russian Chargé d'Affaires Maxim Romanov, and Ali al-Moussawi from the Russian Embassy.
Discussions reportedly touched on the Lebanese-Russian relations, and ways to develop them, in addition to the existing cooperation between the two countries across various fields.
The general situation in Lebanon was also discussed.
Ambassador Rudakov indicated that the discussion also touched on "the invitation extended by Russian President Vladimir Putin to President Aoun to attend the first Arab-Russian summit, to be held in Moscow on October 15, which aims to contribute to further strengthening multifaceted joint cooperation."
On the other hand, President Aoun cabled his Iraqi counterpart, Dr. Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani, offering his deepest condolences for the fallen victims of the tragic fire that broke out in a shopping mall in the city of Kut in Iraq's Wasit Governorate.
President Aoun affirmed Lebanon's solidarity, both its president and people, with Iraq in this ordeal, and the Lebanese people's support for their Iraqi brothers, expressing "Lebanon's readiness to provide all possible support and assistance to confront the repercussions of this unfortunate disaster."
