President of the Republic Joseph Aoun in a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, called on Washington to help ensure Israel’s compliance with the November 27, 2024 declaration to cease hostilities in southern Lebanon, withdraw from occupied positions, release detained Lebanese prisoners, and fully implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
Aoun also urged U.S. assistance in providing the Lebanese Army with equipment and resources to fulfill its nationwide security mandate, and pressed for American backing of efforts to convene an international conference dedicated to Lebanon’s reconstruction.
Secretary Rubio reaffirmed Washington’s continued support for Lebanon, commending the efforts of President Aoun and the Lebanese government to restore stability and resilience.
The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi, Lebanon’s Ambassador to Washington Nada Hamadeh Moawad, and presidential adviser Jean Aziz. On the US side, Rubio was joined by political adviser Michael Needham, Ambassador Tom Barrack, and Morgan Ortagus.
