President of the Republic Joseph Aoun affirmed that "we support the right of Lebanese diaspora to participate alongside Lebanese residents in the Lebanese political decision-making."
President Aoun recalled his remarks to members of the Lebanese community in New York, that "the Lebanese diaspora have a role as partners in Lebanon’s political decision-making through the ballot box."
Aoun stressed "adherence to two fundamental principles in this context, namely holding parliamentary elections on time without postponement under any pretext, and ensuring that expatriate voters participate in the elections." The President considered that "current members of parliament must play their role in affirming and consolidating these two principles."
President Aoun's remarks came during his reception of a parliamentary delegation representing the MPs who signed the expatriate voting bill, during which they discussed the right of Lebanese expatriates to vote and the ongoing debate on this subject, as well as the expatriate voting bill submitted by these MPs.
The delegation included MPs Ghassan Hasbani, Ashraf Rifi, Melhem Riachi, Michel Moawad, Elias Hankash, George Okais, Michel Douaihy, Waddah Sadek, and Mark Daou, who briefed the President on the purpose of their proposal and presented their views in this regard.
