President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, stressed that Beirut’s Rafic Hariri International Airport represented Lebanon’s primary gateway to the world, underscoring the responsibility of security authorities to safeguard it and preserve the country’s image abroad. His remarks came during a meeting with Head of Airport Security Brigadier General Fadi Kfoury and senior officers of the directorate.
In separate meetings, President Aoun was briefed by Beirut Bar Association President, Imad Martinos, on the position of professional syndicates regarding the proposed "financial gap" law, as well as the lawyers’ union’s views on several national issues.
The President also received Director General of State Security, Major General Edgar Lawandos, who outlined the agency’s efforts to combat corruption and prevent bribery within public administrations and state institutions.
The president further met Acting Chair of the Higher Customs Council, Rima Makki, along with members Gracia Qazzi and Wissam Al-Ghoush, emphasizing that technological modernization of customs must go hand in hand with increasing state revenues and preventing smuggling and manipulation of customs duties.
Separately, President Aoun told UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, that Lebanon welcomes any country willing to maintain a presence in the south following UNIFIL’s withdrawal at the end of 2027, once a clear operational framework is agreed. He noted that such support would assist the Lebanese Army, whose troop numbers are set to increase in the coming weeks.
