The French Embassy distributed a statement issued by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot welcoming the Lebanese authorities’ announcement that the objectives of the first phase of the plan to confine weapons to the state have been achieved.
The statement said the progress marks an important step toward restoring the Lebanese state’s sovereignty over all its territory and demonstrates respect for the commitments undertaken by the authorities. It also underscored the pivotal role of the ceasefire monitoring mechanism, in close coordination with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), whose presence and activities remain essential for stability in southern Lebanon and for implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
