President of the Republic Joseph Aoun considered that customs is a fundamental pillar in contributing to the public treasury’s revenues, which requires working to improve collection and simplify procedures and transactions, while enforcing strict monitoring, controlling violations, and punishing perpetrators.
President Aoun said that "smuggling cannot be effectively combated without fighting corruption, and adopting the principles of transparency and accountability without exception, as well as protecting and supporting honest employees, while holding accountable anyone who tarnishes the reputation of the administration."
Aoun also considered that "preventing smuggling across land, sea and air borders is a major national responsibility, where the role of customs complements that of the army and other security forces. Moreover, combating smuggling safeguards the national economy and Lebanese products, especially since smuggling drains the treasury and deprives the state of resources it urgently needs."
The President also emphasized that "adopting modern technology such as scanners and tracking systems is essential to strengthening oversight."
President Aoun’s words came during his meeting this afternoon at Baabda Palace with the head of the Supreme Council of Customs, Brigadier General Misbah Khalil, and council members Charbel Khalil and President Aoun’s remarks came during his meeting this afternoon at Baabda Palace with the Head of the Higher Customs Council, Brig. Gen. Misbah Khalil, Council members Charbel Khalil and Louay Al-Hajj Shehadeh, and the Director General of Customs, Gracia Qazzi.
The delegation briefed President Aoun on the operations at customs, and the essential needs for its development, as well as the strengthening of both human and material resources for better performance and greater effectiveness.
President Aoun praised the efforts currently being made to revitalize customs, calling for the development of a clear strategic plan that takes into account the factors necessary to achieve the desired results.
Separately, President Aoun also met at Baabda Palace with a delegation from the Lions Clubs Association – District 451, which includes Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine, headed by Governor Michel Hassoun.
