Salam Reaffirms Lebanon’s Support for Nuclear Disarmament at Munich Security Conference
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said he met with Melissa Parke, Executive Director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, praising the organization’s leading role in advancing nuclear disarmament and global peace. ICAN was awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize.

Salam reaffirmed Lebanon’s longstanding position, shared by Arab League member states, in favor of establishing a Middle East free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, stressing that this stance has gained renewed urgency amid ongoing wars, rising military spending, and a concerning increase in nuclear warheads after decades of decline.

The PM also emphasized that Lebanon, among the first countries to vote in 2016 at the UN General Assembly in favor of adopting the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, will continue supporting resolutions urging all states to join the treaty.
