Salam discusses IMEC initiative with French President’s Special Envoy
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam met at the Grand Serail with the French President’s Special Envoy for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), Gérard Mestrallet, in the presence of Minister of Public Works and Transport Minister, Fayez Rasamny.

The meeting addressed the economic feasibility of integrating the ports of Beirut and Tripoli into this corridor, in light of the project’s initial phase of planning and feasibility studies. The initiative aims to connect India to Europe through integrated maritime and rail networks that allows for the diversification of trade routes and the bypassing of traditional bottlenecks.

The Prime Minister emphasized that "the rapid shifts in the regional trade map, alongside increasing competition from neighboring ports, make Lebanon’s engagement in regional trade corridors both a strategic opportunity and an urgent necessity for economic recovery."

Salam also welcomed the support and technical assistance being provided by the French government in this regard.

The PM also emphasized that this file is among the government priorities, noting the launch of a comprehensive strategic study on the integration of the transport, energy, and trade sectors with neighboring countries, with support from the World Bank.

The Office of the Prime Minister will coordinate this multi-sector initiative in close collaboration with donor partners, foremost among them the French government.
