MTV Reports Breakthrough on Parliamentary Extension Issue
MTV sources have reported that there is a parliamentary move toward agreeing on a formula to extend the parliament’s term, linked to the exceptional circumstances preventing the holding of elections, provided that consultations secure a majority of 65 votes around a text whose explanatory memorandum refers to avoiding a vacancy in the legislative authority.

In detail, a session of the General Assembly may be called next week, before March 10, to decide on the fate of the elections and discuss a draft law to be presented to MPs for signature collection. MP Nehmat Frem has signed a draft law ending the term of the Lebanese Parliament on May 31, 2028, with a commitment to hold elections as soon as the exceptional circumstances end, which would open the way to discussing a new electoral law.

According to the information, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri has conditioned the extension on a two-year period, while some parties insist on a one-year extension. The Lebanese Forces require, for their approval, that the extension be tied to the exceptional circumstances, with elections to be held after six months or one year.
