Aoun: Lebanon remains committed to negotiation initiative
President Joseph Aoun met with Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot to discuss the ongoing crisis in Lebanon.

During the meeting, President Aoun stated that “Lebanon welcomes any European and Belgian support to halt the war against it.” He condemned the continued Israeli bombardment across Beirut, the Mount Lebanon region, the Bekaa, and the South, emphasizing that attacks on civilians and the resulting humanitarian massacres, which have left hundreds dead and injured, demonstrate Israel’s ongoing aggression and dangerous escalation despite international efforts to contain regional tensions.

Aoun reaffirmed Lebanon’s commitment to his proposed negotiation initiative, which begins with a ceasefire and direct talks between Lebanon and Israel to halt military escalation. “This represents a real opportunity to restore stability to the region,” he said, noting that Israel continues its attacks and refuses to cooperate. He also emphasized Lebanon’s commitment to maintaining the state’s monopoly on arms and extending its authority across all its territory.

President Aoun thanked the European Union and Belgium for their humanitarian assistance.

For his part, Minister Prévot expressed Belgium’s support for President Aoun’s positions and for the decisions of the Lebanese government that reinforce Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He underlined Belgium and the EU’s readiness to provide political and humanitarian support, announcing an increase in social, health, and development aid.
