Tammam Salam, scion of a prominent political family, was officially named the new prime minister of Lebanon on Saturday after he garnered 124 of the 128 votes in Parliament. His designation is a wise choice. As his close friends describe him "good person", optimistic and calm. He is open to all the parties, however he has constant national policy. Salam entered to the politics battlefield along with his father, Saeb Salam, who served six times as Prime Minister.
In 1982, he served as the head of the Makassed charity foundation in Beirut until 2000. He was firstly elected to the parliament in the 1996 elections, but lost his seat in the general polls held in 2000. Then he was back in Saniora's cabinet as culture minister in 2008. And in 2009 Salam won again his seat being a part of Saad Hariri's list in Beirut. Tammam Salam is eager to present himself as an independent and is seen as a centrist with alliances across the political spectrum, while being a part of the Lebanon First bloc. On Wissam Al-Hassan's funeral day, Salam stood next to ex-PM Fouad Sinora, who announced before Ali Al-Amine mosque that an internal conspiracy was made to assassinate Al-Hassan.
Salam also stood by Saad Hariri to demand justice and International Tribunal. Salam is close to March 14 coalition, the political parties and independent politicians who are against illegal weapon. Following in the footsteps of his father, who believed in understanding and dialogue and raised slogans such as "one Lebanon, not two" and "neither victors nor vanquished".
