Awaited for so long and after a rare democratic operation in this corner of the earth, Ahmad al-Jarba was elected as President to the Opposition Syrian National Coalition.
In the second run of ballots which were conducted in the third day of Coalition meetings in Istanbul, al-Jarba, considered close to Saudi Arabi, received 55 votes against 52 votes to Mostafa Assabagh who considered close to Qatar.
Al-Jarba will be succeeding Mouaz al-Khatib who resigned last March to protest against the international stance from the Syrian conflict.
The council also elected on Saturday three vice presidents namely Souheir al-Atassy, Mohammad Farouk Tayfour and Salem Mouçallat. Badr Jamous was elected as Secretary General of the Coalition.
The elected President will not be able to deliver a speech due to the risky situation in Homs but he will have a stance in the coming few days.
