Considering the death toll in Cham, one thousand killed is not anymore breaking news being a daily fact that the world became used to since more than two years and a half. However, 1300 people killed in one day and in one place is a provocative report that could turn the bloodshed in Syria upside down.
Security Council held an emergency meeting on Wednesday night after what could be described as “genocide” and not a “massacre” but results were alike by the call for a ceasefire and request to unveil truth over allegations that Syrian regime used chemical weapons in Damascus provinces.
"We welcome the determination of the secretary general to ensure a thorough and impartial investigation", Argentina's envoy, the Security Council president, Maria Cristina Perceval said after the meeting session. "Any use of chemical weapons is a violation of international law", she said.
Diplomats said Russia and China, seeking to back Bachar al-Assad regime since the start of the Syrian crisis, had opposed the adoption of a formal statement. As what happened after the Egyptian crisis last week, the Council only issued a “press letter” without adopting any resolution to end genocide.
Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson, briefing in a report the situation in Syria for the 15 envoys, said the UN hoped the experts "will be given as soon as possible access to the area by the government".
"Even if currently the use of chemical weapons in Damascus province cannot be confirmed, this represents a serious escalation", Eliasson said.
