According to the Foundation for Strategic Research in Paris, Syria began developing its own chemical production capabilities in 1971. It has the biggest chemical weapons programme in the Middle East, launched with the goal of counterbalancing Israel's nuclear programme.
According to reports, the Syrians have managed to master the synthesis of organophosphorus, that's the last generation, the most efficient and most toxic of chemical weapons.
Syria has "hundreds of tonnes" of diverse chemical agents divided as follows 700 tonnes of sarin gas, 200 tonnes of mustard gas while the rest are ballistic missiles with chemical warheads.
These chemical weapons are stored in caves, estimated to be located in three areas: in Homs between al-Farqaloud and al-Sayed villages, in Qartal in Hama or in Damascus suburb between a military airport and al-Damir region.
Assad crossed the limits when the shelling targeted a residential region in Homs back in December 2012, killing 6 and injuring dozens.
In Aleppo 2013, 5 persons were killed by chemical gases.
In Saraqeb dozens were killed in March 2013 when airstrikes hit the area with bags carrying poisonous dust.
Moreover, in Khan al-Assal 22 were killed and 250 others were wounded by chemical weapons use.
Regime forces and rebels exchanged the accusations.
It is worth to mention that other regions were also shelled with chemical weapons such as Adra, Harasta, Zamalqa, Ain Tarma and Daraya.
However the greatest massacre lies in Eastern Ghouta which counted 1300 victims, as it seems not to be the last.
Is another kind of war has started in Syria?
