Three years ago, MTV headed to Kessrouan’s al-Maaysra to shed light on what was deemed as possible attempts to establish a landfill site. As we aimed once again to the same town in 2014, we perceived a more horrific and dramatic landscape.
During our previous visit, the head of al-Maaysra municipal council brushed aside all accusations claiming that low-profile works were ongoing to establish a landfill site there, stressing instead that a public garden was to be founded.
Alas, the above-mentioned ‘promise’ was outrageously broken as personal, petty interests stepped in to distort the town’s landscape by committing a blatant environmental massacre.
During our tour, several trucks, all loaded with rubble and stones, were perceived emptying their load in the same zone where the alleged garden was supposed to be based. As soon as our team was seen filming the area, trucks were immediately ordered to cease their activity.
The head of al-Maaysra municipal council, Zuhair Omro, didn’t only reject our calls but also tasked a policeman to prevent us from proceeding our tour.
As we managed to elude the policeman and make him think that we had actually left the town, we retraced our steps only to find out that the trucks had resumed their activity.
Al-Maaysra’s landfill is not only distorting the town’s environment, but also affecting neighboring towns, such as al-Okaibe, by causing floods.
