Tom and Jerry Hit Lebanon

A few of you out there might think that this article's title encloses a jape of some sort; an alluring trap that smells of nostalgia, childhood memories and laughter. We confess … Tom and Jerry episodes still play on our screens and never-ending cat and mouse conflict still gets the best of us.

However, you are in for a big surprise, for this odd pair will be visiting Lebanon, not through new episodes or some fancy major feature film …

Tom and Jerry could easily pass for the greatest and most successful cartoon series of all times. The 161 humorous episodes, produced between 1940 and 1967 for the big screen, portrayed the iconic cat and mouse chase where Tom; the bluish feline, will attempt to trap Jerry and gobble him down. Yet, the sly and sunning Jerry always slips away and provokes Tom who ends up falling in some sort of utterly funny predicament.

The cartoons were created by American-Lebanese Storyman and Character Designer Joseph Barbera, who was teamed up with veteran Director William Hannah in 1937 as part of the MGM Cartoon Studios (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer). The simple concept that involved chase and comedy earned the Hannah-Barbera team seven Oscars not to mention the production of more than 300 films over sixty years.

In 1957, Joseph Barbera and William Hannah established their own cartoons company under the Hannah-Barbera name and became an instant success with its renowned characters, particularly Tom and Jerry.

Joseph Barbera passed away on December 18, 2006 at 95 years of age, while his partner William Hannah passed away in 2001 at 90.
