Kataeb Party's Leadership between Nadim and Samy

The chances of electing MP Samy Gemayel as the new president of Kataeb Party are getting higher.

Knowledgeable sources pointed out that President Amine Gemayel is willing to step down for his son Samy, the young man whose responsibility is to renew the old party.

Samy's resignation from the Kataeb's central committee was the introductory step.

According to al-Akhbar daily, the new president will be announced during Kataeb's General Conference which is likely to be held in July. However the secretariat of the party shall issue a memo in April that will officially indicate the exact date of the conference which is held every four years as per the party's interior regulations.

President Amine Gemayel's decision to "abdicate" for his son is opposed by the majority of politburo members in addition to MP Nadim Gemayel.

In an interview with the same daily, Nadim stressed that the members reject this decision because some of them fear for their positions in the future amid "the reign of Samy", while others who are close to Samy deem the circumstances of the party as incongruous for such change.

Nadim expressed his relief over not being concerned in the party's bad image following the change.

"I was once accused of tarnishing the party's image but this time I will not interfere," the young lawmaker added.

"The choice is between Samy and Amine on one hand and between Samy and the party on the other hand, and who will decide," he noted.

"I am not sure that Samy is capable to preserve the party, however I am willing to cooperate with him if he did not exclude me from power," Nadim continued.

Bashir's son warned against using him for attacking his cousin.

"One who believes that he can use me to attack Samy is mistaken; I really appreciate the young man."

Nadim also did not rule out the option of postponing or cancelling the general conference if no agreement was reached on Samy.
