Foreign Affairs Minister Gebran Bassil is set to announce his candidacy for the presidency of FPM on Thursday following the agreement reached with his competitor MP Alain Aoun who withdrew from the race last week.
However, some of the party's supporters seem to be dismayed by the new president-to-be so they decided to hinder his way to the top.
Bassil's opponents called for a gathering today at 8:00 pm at Madison Hotel in Jounieh under the slogan: "Together for a Stronger FPM".
The invitations were sent via Whatsapp mobile application with a text reading, "if you are not satisfied by the internal performance of FPM and you vehemently reject the claimed agreement, join us to express your opinion and to unify our efforts so as to reach a better solution."
Sources say that around 80 cadres and activists are behind this campaign, among them Antoine Nasrallah, Ziad Abs, Ramzi Kanj, Tony Moukhaiber, Ghassan Atallah, Tony Otayek, Michel Haddad, George Atallah, Patrick Rizkallah, Jean-Claude Ghosn, Elsy Moufarrej, Shady Abou Jaoudeh, Rock Chlela, Alain Ayoub and others.
The same sources also noted that the group has amassed more than 3000 votes and their move aims to prevent Gebran Bassil from reaching FPM presidency by default, through highlighting the weaknesses of the internal regulations of the FPM and voicing rejection of the failure to apply the simplest democratic practices.
An FPM activist told MTV website that Change and Reform bloc MP Ziad Aswad is the only deputy who is communicating with this group. The lawmaker also vowed that he would run for the presidency against Bassil, pointing out that he will announce his candidacy during today's gathering.
The source explained that Aswad's candidacy will definitely revive the opposition movement, which comes in line with the activists' actions abroad.
On the other hand, if Aswad does not keep his promise, then Fares Louis will be the only option left to obstruct Bassil's path.
The activist who spoke on condition of anonymity concluded that the group's action will not end on September 20 after the first elections within FPM, but will actually start on said day...
