The Honourable Geoff Regan, Speaker of Canada's House of Commons, accompanied by a delegation of Canadian parliamentarians, visited Lebanon on October 8 and 9, 2018, a statement by the Canadian Embassy in Beirut indicated.
During his visit, Speaker Regan met with H.E. General Michel Aoun, President of the Lebanese Republic, H.E. Saad Hariri, Prime Minister designate, and H.E. Nabih Berri, Speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, as well as government officials. The promotion of democratic values, good governance, transparency and accountability, were at the heart of those meetings.
Speaker Regan's visit highlighted the strong bilateral relations between Canada and Lebanon and the importance Canada places on Lebanon's security and stability as outlined inCanada's Middle East Strategyannounced by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in February 2016.
Speaker Reganmet with civil society representatives and discussed best practices for enhancing public governance, transparency and inclusive parliament.
He also visited Canadian funded aid programming that is helping to build resilience and respond to the needs of the most vulnerable Lebanese and refugee communities in Lebanon.
Overall the visit contributed to further strengthening the deep-rooted relations between Canada and Lebanon that are based on strong people to people communities, and the continued collaboration between the two countries in ensuring peace and security.
