The United Arab Emirates Ambassador to Lebanon, Hamad Saeed al-Shamsi, said Lebanon is a country of national coexistence, deeming it as "a unique icon in the Arab world."

Ambassador Shamsi's words came during a ceremony held in his honor by the American University of Science and Technology (AUST), in recognition of his diplomatic march and his significant social and humanitarian endeavors.

The honorary ceremony, hosted by AUST President, Hiam Sakr, was attended by the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Apostolic Nuncio Monsignor Joseph Spiteri, and Ambassadors of Morocco, Algeria and Yemen, as well as the Dean of the Consular Corps Joseph Habis.

Scores of political, diplomatic, academic, cultural, social and media dignitaries were also present.

Shamsi thanked the University for honoring him, saying educational edifices and academic institutions remain the ideal yardstick for determining the development of societies.

"A society can not achieve tangible steps and create new dynamic and creative spheres without bright minds, solid will and unswerving determination," Ambassador Shamsi corroborated.

Shamsi also underlined that the scourge of extremism and terrorism can be eliminated by nurturing thought, stressing that "culture, knowledge and science are the tools to counter extremism that feeds on ignorance and illiteracy."

The UAE Ambassador also indicated that religions in essence call for good deeds, synergy and rapprochement, saying "this can not be achieved without educational institutions and academic edifices that complement the role of the family and society in the education of young people."
