The US State Department announced on Saturday that it had expelled two members of the Iranian delegation that took part in the UN General Assembly meetings after they remained in the United States despite being ordered to leave.
A US official told Agence France-Presse that “two additional members of the Iranian delegation were found to still be in New York long after the UN General Assembly had concluded. They have now been expelled from the United States.”
The official added that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio “means what he says.”
According to US media reports, the State Department had asked Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and his accompanying delegation to leave the country before discovering that the two members were still in New York.
Axios reported that one of the delegation members left the United States late Friday, while the other departed Saturday morning.
The decision comes after US and Iranian officials held meetings in New York last week amid the UN General Assembly meetings.
US President Donald Trump had rejected an Iranian proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days, but told US media that he expected talks to resume in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Iran’s official news agency reported that no further direct talks between Tehran and Washington were scheduled.
