Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Bechara Boutros Rahi expressed his deep sorrow over the clashes taking place in the Ain al-Helweh camp, considering that “these bitter events strike at the heart of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.”
He pointed out, in his Sunday sermon, that "Neutrality requires that Lebanon control its internal sovereignty with one army, one authority, and one foreign policy, and that it control its external sovereignty over its borders by controlling them and defending itself with its own organized forces."
Rahi called for “electing a president and implement the Taif Agreement, thus putting an end to the chaos in administrative and security appointments as well as to the arbitrary interpretation of the Constitution,” noting that “diversity in unity makes Lebanon a haven of meeting, dialogue, and general civil liberties, as recognized by the Human Rights Charter.”
