Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati delivered a speech at the COP28 climate conference in Dubai, expressing gratitude to the UAE for hosting the event. He highlighted Lebanon's urgent need to enhance its resilience, facing both climate change challenges and ongoing Israeli aggression, which has resulted in environmental degradation and displacement of thousands. Mikati emphasized the severe consequences of wars and military attacks on the environment, calling for international legal frameworks to address such issues.
Referring to the UAE's commitment to climate action, including the creation of a $30 billion global climate solutions fund, Mikati stressed the necessity of mitigating direct impacts and promoting strategies for climate resilience. He urged expanded financing mechanisms to address growing challenges, particularly in rebuilding a sustainable green economy in Lebanon.
Mikati emphasized the need to revitalize Lebanon's energy sector, calling for sufficient funding to update and transition to clean and renewable energy sources, thereby mitigating negative climate change effects. In discussing crucial aspects such as global assessment, adaptation, mitigation, resilience, and financing, Mikati called for collaboration beyond disagreements to ensure a better future for future generations.
He concluded by invoking the legacy of Sheikh Zayed, highlighting the importance of tolerance and coexistence. Mikati praised the UAE's historical figures, especially Sheikh Zayed, for leaving indelible marks in various fields, echoing their shared commitment to shaping a sustainable future.
