President Donald Trump acknowledged that the war with Iran affected the outcome of the US midterm elections, but insisted that dealing with Iran was something he had to do.
Speaking during a ceremony marking the installation of the final structural beam in the White House’s new ballroom, Trump said the war against Iran was worthwhile, despite acknowledging its role in the Republican Party’s losses in the congressional midterms, which cost it control of both chambers of Congress.
Asked about Vice President JD Vance’s remarks that the war with Iran was the reason for the defeat, Trump told reporters at the site of the new White House ballroom: I think that's largely true, because the war caused fuel prices to rise a little bit in the short term.
He added that he would make the same decision again if given the choice, saying: In the long run, this is the only solution. Iran cannot be allowed to have a nuclear weapon.
If I had been on the ballot, we would have won, Trump said, adding: But they just weren't able to transfer that love. There was so much love at those rallies, it was incredible, and we weren't able to transfer that love to the candidates.
Trump also expressed confidence that he would “probably” be able to reach an understanding with Democrats, adding: If the Democrats impeach me, it will destroy the Democratic Party.
Asked about the possibility of impeachment proceedings following his Republican Party’s major midterm defeat, Trump said: I think it would destroy the Democratic Party if they did that, insisting there was “no reason” to impeach him.
Meanwhile, Vance wrote in a post on X: “The reason we lost is the war. If you want to say that the war was worth it, and that losing the Senate for the next six years was a price worth paying, then say so. Say that it was a price worth paying.
Vance also said that an earlier recommendation to end the war had been “good advice.”
