A fire broke out in an army fuel tank at Zahrani oil installations on Monday.
Fifteen fully-staffed fire trucks worked on taming the fire and preventing it from spreading to other tanks in order to preserve public safety.
Prime Minister Najib Mikati had dispatched Energy Minister Walid Fayad to Zahrani oil installations to inspect the situation and circumstances behind the fire that broke out.
Upon his arrival, Fayad said that we must wait for the results of the investigation to know whether someone was responsible for the fire or if a natural cause led to it. The Minister added that "the surface of the tank is slanted, which is why oil was transferred from it; we have limited resources and competencies, and as a result, the situation deteriorated.” He revealed that "there is a loss of 250 thousand liters of gasoline."
Fayad stated that the Central Bank confirmed that it is possible to proceed with the credit that was opened to secure fuel for electricity, and that he "has not taken a final decision regarding the price of gas, for it is set according to the dollar exchange rate."
Preliminary data indicate that the cause of the fire at Zahrani oil installations is friction during the transfer process, and a committee of specialists will be formed to follow up on the issue.
