Lebanese Forces Chief Samir Geagea said Tuesday that the referendum suggested by MP Michel Aoun does not target any Christian or non-Christian party because it is not mandatory as it does not violate the constitution.
Geagea also opined that the solution to resolve the presidential impasse is when all deputies head to the parliament and elect a new president as soon as possible.
"We will extend our congratulations to whomever wins," he said before a university gathering.
"I also urge the parties who are boycotting the polls to not wait for indications or foreign developments or to bet on Iran's nuclear deal," the Maronite leader added.
On the Christians' situation, Geagea noted that their situation is fairly good despite the hardships they witnessed during the Syrian mandate, "but now it is time to restore their leadership and active role."
