Canadian residents in Lebanon were on the receiving end of quite a peculiar message.
The message purportedly sent by the Canadian Embassy advised residents to remain vigilant ahead and following the presidential vote session scheduled for Monday October 31.

"Dear Canadians,
You are receiving this email because you are registered with the Government of Canada's Registration of Canadians Abroad service. Please share the following important information with other Canadian nationals in your area.
Presidential elections for Lebanon are scheduled to take place on October 31, 2016. Canadians residing in or travelling in Lebanon are advised to exercise a high degree of caution and to avoid political gatherings and demonstrations. We would also encourage you to try and limit your travel within the country during the week following the elections.
Below is a list of essential goods we recommend you to keep on hand:
• Water - Have 6 litres per person per day for 5 days. This water can be used for both drinking and sanitation purposes.
• Food - Have enough non-perishable food on hand to feed everyone in your household for at least three days. Consider purchasing food that will not have to be cooked prior to consumption, as electricity and gas utilities may be offline for some time.
• Battery-powered or hand-crank radio. Being able to listen to local broadcasts over the radio will help you to stay informed during an emergency situation.
• Flashlight and extra batteries (Ensure batteries are fully charged). As electrical utilities may be offline, this may be your only source of light.
• Cash - As a disruption in electrical utilities may last for several days or weeks, after an emergency, banks may not be open and ATMs may not function.
• First Aid Kit
• Propane for your BBQ. This can be used as an alternative means of preparing food in the event of a power outage.
• Prescription Medicines. Ensure that you have a sufficient supply of all your required medicines.
• Fuel. Ensure that you have a full tank of fuel in your personal vehicle.
• Credit for cell phones. Ensure that you have enough credit on your cell phones to make calls and send SMS messages, and cell phone is fully charged.
If you have already left and are no longer in Lebanon, please send an email to our Registration of Canadians Abroad email address at [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> in order to end your registration in our system."
