MP Paula Yacoubian proposed Saturday a speedy project law to amend some provisions of the "illicit enrichment law".
"These amendments, if approved, will lead to the recovery of looted funds," Yacoubian explained.
She added: "In response to the pulse of the street and the rightful demands of the people expressed through demonstrations, sit-ins and peaceful protests, the need to introduce amendments to the law became a necessity, most notably to accord permission by the Parliament Council to prosecute any of its members for the crime of illicit enrichment."
Yacoubian highlighted the need to cancel "the incapacitating conditions for filing complaints and prosecution in cases of illicit enrichment, particularly the twenty-five million Lebanese pounds guarantee."
The MP stressed that "this law must be part of the legislative session called for upcoming Tuesday," hoping that the session would be "up to the level and importance of the current critical stage, and to result in the adoption of considerable laws."
"It is essential that this law be incorporated into the other 16 laws' list, in addition to the law on the independence and transparency of the judiciary she presented earlier, which was not studied by the committees concerned," Yacoubian emphasized. She indicated that this step "would prove that we are serious in dealing with the crisis at hand, and that there is a new approach to meeting the demands of the people.
