Maronite Patriarch Bechara Rahi stressed on Monday that "it is unacceptable that politicians hold the state hostage in favor of a person or a group, no matter how delusional they are of their strength and power."
Speaking at the opening session of the Assembly of the Catholic Patriarchs and Bishops, Rahi considered that "the uprising carried out by the Lebanese people is historic and not subject to any sect."
"The people have shown in their uprising that their citizenship belonging is superior to any other affiliation, and hence have revived the principle foundation upon which the Lebanese regime was initially based, i.e. citizenship and not religion", he added.
The Patriarch indicated that the Lebanese youth and all citizens have voiced their lack of confidence in political leaders, calling for officials known for their competence and integrity. "They have said their word in a civilized and unified manner," he said.
"The Lebanese are demanding a neutral government, free of politicians and parties, to be able to carry out necessary reforms in infrastructure, and to combat corruption and control public spending," Rahi corroborated.
The Patriarch regretted that certain sides are still not concerned with the voice of the youth and the people and the collapse of the state, and are thus hindering the advancement march towards a more promising future.
