MP Hagop Terzian said in a statement Saturday that the banking sector in Lebanon must strive to benefit the country, after the huge profits it has reaped from the nation in the previous years.
"What is happening today on the financial scene, especially the banks' approach towards depositors and the intransigence in their procedures, is a humiliation of the Lebanese citizens and undermines their dignity," Terzian said.
He added that this approach also affects the movement of trade and import of goods; thus, pushing in the wrong direction, i.e. in triggering the rise in the USD and weakening the purchasing power of Lebanese citizens.
"In the end, the role of banks should be dynamic in stimulating the economic cycle and supplying the markets with their currency needs. Otherwise, we will consider that banks in Lebanon are no longer trustworthy anymore," Terzian underscored.
