North Korea has announced it conducted a tactical ballistic missile test that features a new autonomous navigation system.
The state-run Korean Central Television said on Saturday that the country's Missile Administration carried out the test-launch in waters off the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula. The report said North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un oversaw it. A released photo shows a missile reportedly striking its target.
North Korea has been developing tactical ballistic missiles, which the North says are designed to carry nuclear warheads. Observers say the missiles could be used in potential attacks on South Korean and US military bases in South Korea.
On Friday, Kim said North Korea's enemies would be afraid of playing with fire when they witness its "nuclear combat posture." He made the remark when he visited a defense industrial complex. He also stressed the need to accelerate activities for bolstering the country's "nuclear force."
The South Korean military said North Korea launched what appeared to be multiple short-range ballistic missiles toward waters off the eastern coast on Friday afternoon.
