Public Prosecutor's office at the Court of Cassation issues clarification
The Public Prosecutor's office at the Court of Cassation issued the following statement: "Some media outlets circulated news that a person was recently arrested in the United States after having committed moral crimes and that the same person had previously been prosecuted in Lebanon without any decision to arrest him. The Office of the Public Prosecutor was attacked and its work was questioned, as well as the work of the Public Appeals Prosecutor, who oversaw the preliminary investigation.
The Office of the Public Prosecutor clarifies that the Code of Criminal Procedure prohibits pretrial detention for crimes of sexual harassment, the maximum penalty of which does not exceed one year in prison, and that this person is still under arrest in the United States for violating residency procedures.
The aforementioned person had previously been arrested in Beirut during the initial investigations for a period of 48 hours after the enforcement of the search and investigation warrant against him. A second search and investigation warrant was also issued against him after he refused to appear again for investigation, and he was brought to trial before the criminal judge to clarify the actions in question. He was also prosecuted for similar actions by Mount Lebanon Public Prosecutor at the Court of Appeal.
The Public Prosecutor's office at the Court of Cassation calls on everyone to be accurate and objective when reporting judicial news."
