Someone at work recently said to me when I asked if she’s feeling the Christmas spirit: “I don’t care much for it. This holiday is just for kids.”
A lot of people feel that way and I just don’t get it. Alright so you don’t need to be hopped up on hot chocolate with mini marshmallows like I am (proudly), but Christmas is a wonderful excuse to spice up our lives, to give it a touch of the extraordinary.
Why would we let the harshness and drabness of reality devoid us of all sense of wonder?
Staying connected to that eight-year-old version of you is the answer and the only way to be truly happy.
Try to remember: what was it about the holidays you looked forward to the most? What made it feel like a magical Hollywood movie? Try to recreate those moments, to relive them.
I bet if you really think about it, you’ll find that it was your parents and their diligence to giving you a fairytale childhood, that made the holidays feel so otherworldly: home decorations, Christmas markets, visiting Santa in an events venue to have milk, cookies and cupcakes with him.
Be a creator of magic this time of year (and all year round might I add) by crafting your own “adult” Christmas rituals:
Do the Secret Santa tradition with loved ones, put some thought into the gifts, and make them personal.
Set up a date night with your lover, sibling or friend. Cozy up the room with blankets, lights, some candles, Christmas-themed snacks, pjs and socks to veg out in front of the TV and watch holiday movies.
Doing good for others will spark a warmth in your belly and give you the reassuring realization that you can make a difference in someone’s life. This is a perfect way to get into the spirit of the season.
Go to Christmas parties to share in the merriment with friends and family. Indulge in the traditions like drinking eggnog or liqueur, dancing and singing to holiday tunes, and giving your significant other, or a handsome stranger, a kiss under the mistletoe.
In conclusion, events organized by the church or the local community are wonderful at bringing people together and infusing them instantly with happiness. They make them realize that they are not alone in the world, their voice matters, their struggles are shared by many. It’s the perfect meeting point to learn about faith, the real meaning of Christmas and to become wrapped in a sense of belonging which is crucial to our joy.
