In a press conference on Wednesday, Minister of Environment, Fadi Jreissati, called for "stripping the environment from any political, religious, or sectarian cover because we will all pay the price."
He confirmed that landfills were expensive and pointed to the impossibility of making a landfill for each region. "The truth of co-existence has been unveiled today: it is a lie," he added.
Jreissati considered that Law #80 in 2018 provided for decentralization in treating the trash crisis. "We should cooperate and not avoid responsibility," he stressed.
"The Ministry of Environment has done its job so that decentralization remains truthful, not another lie or logo," Jreissati confirmed. "We are close to the start of solutions in North Lebanon. Everyone has to accept the fact that the solution won't please everybody. We have contacted the Mirador project owner and the land has been offered for free. There are four substitutes between Miniyeh and Danniyeh," he explained.
"We are facing opposition whenever we choose a location for a landfill, but we have to go for a less risky solution because there is no ecological solution without damage," he added.
"Every solution will face opposition and trash cannot be a platform for leadership," the Minister concluded.
