Caretaker Economy and Trade Minister, Raoul Nehme, indicated in a statement on Saturday that “the Minister of Economy is responsible for the commission that monitors insurance bodies, and is constantly urging insurance companies to compensate those affected by the Beirut Port explosion, to protect their rights…However, these companies cannot be obliged to compensate without the issuance of an official report stating the reasons behind the blast, because most insurance and reinsurance contracts exclude acts of war and terrorism from the scope of coverage."
He added that in light of the above, the Insurance Control Commission has addressed a letter to the judicial investigator into the Beirut port explosion, to highlight the importance of clarifying as soon as possible the causes that led to the blast, hoping that in the event that the investigations reach a conclusion, it would be announced in order for the commission to take the necessary measures.
“The letter does not aim in any way to interfere with the work of the judiciary, and the commission is fully prepared to withdraw and rewrite it, given its misinterpretation in a way that is not in line with its intended goal,” Nehme’s statement concluded.
