I’m on a never-ending quest to figure out how to live my best life and how to leave an imprint of goodness wherever I go. What constitutes the key elements transcending countries and cultures to leading an existence that fills you with content? Scientists have long explored the possibilities and delved into meticulous research to come up with this outcome. We have to get our ducks in a row in these areas to experience real satisfaction.
Career Wellbeing is so vital. It relates to enjoying how you spend your time at work. How much you are invested and actually like what you do for a living gives you a sense of purpose like no other. It increases your sense of self-worth and gives you the clarity and strength to make better choices
Social Wellbeing is derived from fostering healthy and nourishing relationships with your family members, friends and partner. Connecting with other people gives meaning and solace to our existence. We are creatures who thrive by feeling loved and accepted, most importantly by people who speak our language, in other words, by people who get us
Getting a handle on your financials will provide security and solid ground without which all your efforts will be shaky and filled with dread of the unknown. Financial Wellbeing relies on being able to become your own best Financial Manager, and earn a decent living to be able to afford the amenities and necessities of modern life
Physical Wellbeing is the fourth element and it revolves around taking care of your health. Staying active, exercising, stretching, being involved in activities you enjoy such as hiking, swimming, yoga, tennis, basketball, football. They get your body moving and give you enough energy to get things done daily. Happy neurotransmitters or endorphins are released in your body as well, making you an all-around happier person if you exercise on the regular
The environment you’re growing in or not growing in plays a major part in your comfort.
This fifth element, Community Wellbeing, is about the sense of involvement you feel with where you live. An environment that encourages you to be yourself and to evolve into a better version of yourself is the ideal to aim for
Statistics would have us believe that 66% of people are performing adequately in at least one of these areas while a measly 7% are succeeding in all five. 7%! This goes to show that it’s darn hard to human. Working on bettering ourselves in any of these aspects will have a positive impact on our days. Living well in all five is the ticket to getting the most out of our journey. And finding the drive egging us on to be the best that we can be is the key to stay motivated and the glue binding all five elements together. For some of us, our faith, our spirituality could be the great motivator to perform well in these areas. For others, it’s a higher purpose, such as being of service to our fellow man or safeguarding the environment. Whatever the motivator may be, our goal should be not to squander this great gift by just coasting by lazily and cowardly, settling for a mediocre or depressing existence.
